Portugal off to a winning start

With the heroic feats of Rugby World Cup 2007 still very much in the minds of the young Portuguese team, the opening game against Belgium offered them a chance to mark down their title credentials and they started in style, despatching Belgium 38-9.

Portugal scored two tries through Francisco Tavarez and Joao Marquez in an entertaining opening half to stretch to a 15-9 lead. Belgium’s points came courtesy of the boot of fly half Julien de Somer, who kicked a penalty and a drop goal, while full back Paul Henri D Gangue also kicked a drop goal to keep the Belgians in contention at the interval.

That though was as close as the Belgians were to come as Portugal cut loose in the second half, scoring three tries without reply through Salgado (2) Frederico Olivera.

Two more match rounds remain on October 15 and 18 and will be played at the Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark in Heidelberg.
